How to price an ebook on KDP in 2026

By Deimira, founder of Wordhaven · Last updated July 22, 2026

Most fiction ebooks in 2026 sell best between $2.99 and $5.99, and new authors do best in the $2.99-4.99 band. The floor of that range is set by Amazon's royalty structure: ebooks priced from $2.99 to $9.99 qualify for the 70% royalty rate in most marketplaces, while pricing outside the band drops you to 35%. Price at $1.99 and you earn less per copy than at $2.99 while signaling lower quality. The band is where the math and the psychology agree.

What each price point earns and signals

$2.9970%~$2.05Standard debut fiction
$4.9970%~$3.45Established indie, full-length novel

Per-copy figures are approximate because the 70% tier deducts a small delivery fee based on file size. Keep images lean and the fee stays pennies.

Genre sets the band harder than quality does

Readers carry a learned price for each shelf. Romance and thriller readers who burn through several books a week expect $2.99-4.99 and Kindle Unlimited availability. Epic fantasy tolerates $5.99 for length. Specialist nonfiction runs $7.99-9.99 on the strength of outcomes, and 2026's drift toward value-based pricing shows up mostly on that shelf. Check the top 20 in your subgenre and price inside their range; a debut priced above the shelf reads as a mistake, priced far below it reads as a warning.

Series pricing is a funnel, standalone pricing is a sale

With a series, book one is marketing: $0.99 or free works as a paid sample when books two through five sit at $4.99. Do the arithmetic on read-through, since a $0.99 book one only pays when readers continue. A standalone has no downstream sale to subsidize it, so price it in the band and let the listing do the converting.

Test the price with the rest of the listing

Price never acts alone; readers judge it against your cover, blurb, and page count in one glance. A Reader Test evaluates the whole listing at your chosen price and reports predicted conversion plus a price acceptance signal per reader segment, with price resistance flagged when it is the binding constraint. Run it at $2.99 and $4.99, compare conversion, and take the price the panel supports. After launch, KDP lets you change price freely; give each change two weeks of data before judging.
